Intangible, project by: Carl Emil Carlsen

This year’s selected artists for the European Media Art Platform’s residency programme take on unusual connections and current issues in a variety of ways. They explore the coexistence of urban centres and natural ecosystems, illuminate exciting possibilities for interplanetary existence, confront current scepticism about technology and “techlore,” and work between art, and artistic research.

This year's RIXC Centre for New Media Culture selected artist of the year is Carl Emil Carlsen. Carl Emil Carlsen is a Danish artist and designer who uses computation to create interactive audiovisual experiences, using generative algorithms and mixed-reality illusions to explore virtual phenomena in physical spaces. He has a background in visual music and has performed with Silicium at events like Ars Electronica. Carlsen has contributed to various VR, AR, and XR productions in performance, film, theater, and product development. He has also been an external lecturer at the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design.

At the RIXC residency, Carl Emil Carlsen invites the viewer to an intimate encounter with unknown materials on the other side of the screen. The artist will explore the structures, forms, and behaviors of unfamiliar materials that stimulate our senses. He will attempt an exploration based on playfulness, drawing inspiration from otherworldly phenomena, seeking solutions in topics such as oddly satisfying and Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR). As a result, the artist will create an immersive artwork called "Intangible" - a VR headset-enabled audiovisual sensory experience, inviting users to explore a series of generative artworks with their hands. The artwork "Intangible" challenges the boundaries between physical and virtual, inviting viewers to engage in his immersive and thought-provoking installations.

EMAP, co-funded by EU's Creative Europe program, supports critical collaboration projects by emerging artists in video, digital, robotics, bio and other media arts. Since 2018, 59 projects have been commissioned, receiving 18 international awards and exhibited at prestigious institutions. The 16 selected artists from 35 countries will participate in a 2-month, fully-funded residency with an EMAP partner and exhibit in group shows in the next 2 years.

About European Media Art Platform

The European Media Art Platform (EMAP), initiated by Werkleitz and co-funded by Creative Europe since 2018, is a consortium of leading European media art organisations specialising in video, digital art, robotics, bio art and other forms of media art. The consortium has 15 members and over 80 partners, and it includes renowned festivals, laboratories and institutions that investigate and present these interdisciplinary art forms. Through an open call, EMAP members offer emerging artists two-month residencies to support the production of new projects and the development of their professional careers. EMAP is built on the legacy of the European Media Artist in Residence Exchange (EMARE) which has existed since 1995. EMAP also acts as a platform for members and partners to select artists and works for festivals and exhibitions they organise. In addition to production support for artists, EMAP provides an international platform for collaboration and the promotion and dissemination of media art.
