The sensor based SEE YOU exhibition by Martins Vizbulis will open at the RIXC Gallery, Lencu iela 2 on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at 18:00. The exhibition will be on view until February 22, 2025.

Opening hours: Wednesday-Saturday, 12:00-18:00. Free entry.

One of the inspirations of the SEE YOU artwork by Martins Vizbulis is Norwegian sociologist Thomas Mathiesen's article "The Viewer Society: Michel Foucault's `Panopticon' Revisited" (1997), in which he describes the principles of panopticism, synopticism and modern synopticism or the evolution of surveillance to the present day. The latter principle, modern synopticism, in which the observed observes something while it is simultaneously being observed by someone else, is of particular interest to the artist. The observer is offered objects to observe and, depending on his reaction, the possibility arises to offer more engaging or more in-demand content. Many observe what is offered by a few, while few observe many.

The exhibition explores how, in the context of surveillance, people have lost a certain kind of freedom that, in principle, could potentially be regained in the future.

In his art practice, Martins Vizbulis has been exploring microcontrollers and various sensors, creatively combining reality with virtual reality and engaging viewers in direct interaction with artworks. He holds a BA and MA from the Visual Communication Department of the Art Academy of Latvia (LMA) and is the Head of the Environmental Art Department at the Audiovisual Media Art Department of the LMA. The artist is currently one of the most prominent figures in Latvia’s contemporary new media art scene.

The exhibition will be on view until February 22, 2025, at the RIXC Gallery, Lencu iela 2, Wednesday-Saturday, 12.00-18.00.
Free entry.

The title of the exhibition is an English term for saying goodbye, with the idea that you will meet again soon. If we translate it to Latvian, it is understood literally – to see, observe someone. In the exhibition, it can be interpreted in either way.
