From September 4 to October 25, the Transition Ecologies exhibition by Maija Demitere is on view at the RIXC Gallery, Lencu iela 2. The exhibition reflects on the shifting relationship between humans and nature, as old balances collapse and the need for new ecological connections emerges.
Transition Ecologies introduces this year's RIXC Art and Science Festival theme of "plants intelligence," which reflects on new ways of creating knowledge and the coexistence of multispecies. The festival will take place from October 16 to November 23, offering a broad program of a symposium, exhibition, creative workshops, performances, and film screenings.
The exhibition focuses on the relationship between humans and the environment at a time when the usual balances are collapsing and new ecological connections need to be sought. At its center is an aquaponics system that demonstrates food cultivation in water without soil and introduces the principles behind this technology, which involves the thoughtful use of materials and planned long-term resource consumption. The exhibition also includes an algae "bioreactor," which uses visual and informational materials to reveal the fragile balance of water ecology, with a special focus on the situation in the Baltic Sea.
Ecology is the main theme that Demitere works with in both her art and research, constantly sparking discussions on globally significant and often unpopular topics. She believes that art can serve as a powerful tool for raising awareness of these issues and educating the public.
Maija Demitere is an artist and researcher whose work brings together ecology, sustainability, and technology. She works with an interdisciplinary approach, creating works and objects that combine art, innovation, and technological experimentation. At the core of her practice are themes of food, resources, and waste cycles, through which she explores the interrelationships between humans, the environment, and technology.
The exhibition is on view until October 25, 2025, at the RIXC Gallery, Lenču iela 2, Wednesday-Saturday, 12:00-18:00.
