The RIXC Art Science Festival "Plants Intelligence" has been nominated for the Annual Art Award of Latvia in the "Event of the Year 2025" category – the winner will be announced and the award presented on April 18 in Valmiera.
The first Annual Art Award of Latvia is a testament to the fact that art is an integral part of our culture, capable of uniting, inspiring, and fostering an understanding of the world in which we live. This award is an annual honor in the Latvian visual arts sector, and its goal is to highlight the year’s most significant events and figures in the art world, identify current trends, and promote the development of artistic processes. It is not only a recognition but also a platform that allows for reaching a wider audience by fostering a dialogue between art and society.
The Annual Art Award of Latvia will be presented in ten categories: Artist of the Year, Artwork of the Year, Event of the Year, Visual Design of an Exhibition or Event, Research of the Year, Curator of the Year, Debut/Breakthrough of the Year, Text of the Year, Event Promoting Education or Public Engagement, Lifetime Achievement. Each category highlights essential aspects of the visual arts sector, emphasizing both individual creative achievements and collective processes, forms of collaboration, and long-term contributions to the sector’s development.
The first Annual Art Award of Latvia ceremony will take place in Valmiera in April 2026 and is intended as a celebration for both visual arts professionals and the wider public. Establishing a new tradition—the LMGB Art Week—the award ceremony is planned to be held annually in a different Latvian city in collaboration with the local municipality and residents. The first venue will be Valmiera, where, in collaboration with the regional municipality, the Art Week will feature exhibitions, lectures, performances, and diverse activities for various audiences, highlighting visual arts professionals and cultural venues working in the city and region of Valmiera.
The award is initiated and funded by the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Latvia, and its organization is managed by the creative collective “Collective WW.” Each laureate will receive a cash prize of 1,500 euros after taxes, as well as a physical award designed by artist Krišs Salmanis.
