A conversation with Rasa Smite (artist and researcher, FHNW Basel) and Monika Messmer (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL, Frick) will be moderated by the artist Riikka Tauriainen, taking place on Sunday, April 14, 2024, 14:00-16:00 at Rehmann Museum, Laufenburg.
Plants_Intelligence. Learning Like a Plant is an SNSF-supported research project of the Institute Art Gender Nature HGK Basel FHNW, which will be the focus of the discussion.
Monika Messmer (Research Institute of Organic Agriculture FiBL, Frick) will explore the question of how plants forge alliances. She will talk about breeding research at FiBL: There, they are investigating how plants interact with soil microorganisms. She will explain what the "holobiont theory" is. The scientific term refers to the theory that all living organisms exist through symbiotic relationships, depend on each other and live together as a whole.
Rasa Smite (artist and researcher, FHNW Basel/Institute of Art Gender Nature) reports on the Swiss National Science Foundation project Plants_Intelligence. Learning Like a Plant. From the perspective of art, the Plants_Intelligence team asks whether recognising plant intelligence leads to other methods of generating knowledge, of living together, of breeding new, "intelligent" forms of plant and agricultural culture.
Moderated by the exhibiting artist Riikka Tauriainen, who will also summarise and translate when spoken in English.
The conversation is part of the exhibition Schimelrych bis Chrottehalde: Kunst und Natur in Laufenburg at the Jurapark Aargau and the Rehmann Museum.
