Visit the presentation of the “New Media Art. Preservation and Representation” book by Raitis Smits at the opening of the RIXC Art Science festival at the Kim? Contemporary Art Centre, August 25, 18:00! The book is a relevant research on the main principles of contemporary or new media art preservation and representation.

New media art originated relatively recently – at the end of the 20th century when two parallel historical development lines of contemporary art and modern technologies met. At the end of the 20th century, a new (global, network-based) medium is born – the internet, which inspires creative experiments and a search for new art forms of the 20th century’s 90s artists. Internet and computer technologies became a medium to create new media artworks, and showcases and partially, contributed to the new media art preservation as well. Raitis Smits analyzed and described the new media art development, and processes that have influenced both the relevance of the new media in a wider context of the contemporary information society, and the issues that are related to the new media art preservation and representation over a longer period of time.

Raits Smits is a new media artist and the pioneer of network art in Latvia, the founder of the RIXC Center for New Media Culture in Riga, as well as the associated professor of the Art Academy of Latvia and guest lecturer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.
