Spīķeri Concert Hall

This year the Festival concert and live performance programme at Spikeri Concert Hall will offer radio performance by wondrous violinist Mia ZABELKA (AT), live mix of sound and stereoscopic 16 mm film projections by Makino TAKASHI (JP), transcendent mixage between a live extended cello and laser objects by Yamila RIOS & Joris STRIJBOS (NL), as well as oscillon abstractions and electricity graphics by CLAUSTHOME and Martins RATNIKS (LV).

Mia Zabelka (AT)

RADIO VIOLIN

Radio performance

Mia Zabelka uses her electric violin, her voice and electronics for this radio performance that was performed live at the ORF Ö1 Kunstradio program in Vienna for the first time using an antenna to power her radio violin by transforming radio signals into electricity. Using two speaker systems she is able to hear both what she is playing live and the received radio signals that she has played miliseconds earlier, the latter now transformed to provide her violin’s pick up microphones with electric power. The acoustic delay becomes part of the piece, a constant echo, a memory.

Mia Zabelka, composer, violinist and vocalist from Vienna, with czech, jewish and french familiar background, lives in the Austrian region of southern Styria. As a performer of Avantegarde Music she has developed a unique language based on the deand reconstruction of the violin’s sonic possibilities, expanding the instrument using live electronic devices and innovative performance techniques.Mia Zabelka developed the process she describes as automatic playing, continuously exploring sound and music as physical phenomena, always pushing back the boundaries in radical and provocative performances and compositions that question established notions and given structures. She has given concerts and performances throughout Europe, America and Asia. Recipient of numerous prizes (3-time winner oft the Prix Ars Electronica) and awards, she was a guest of the DAAD's (German Academic Exchange Service's) international artists' programme in Berlin and the Fulbright Commission in New York.

Collaborations with various international artists including John Zorn, David Moss, Peter Kowald, Phil Wachsman, Alvin Curran, Pauline Oliveros, Lukas Ligeti, Scanner and many others. In 2007 Mia Zabelka founded the klang.haus, a centre for sound and interdisciplinary art at her house in southern Styria. The klang.haus is a meeting point for international and local artists and hosts the klang.zeit festival four times a year. In 2009 Mia Zabelka became the artistic director of phonofemme Vienna, an international Festival of Sound Art and improvised Music. Mia Zabelka is currently collaborating in Duos with Lydia Lunch, Werner “Zappi” Diermaier, Gino Robair and Zahra Mani, with Video Artist Mia Makela and in Trios with Pavel Fajt/ Johannes Frisch, Meinrad Kneer/Albert van Veenendaal and John Russell/Maggie Nicols.

Makino Takashi (JP)

SPACE NOISE 3D

Using both film and video projectors the artist creates moving images with complex contrast. The audience watch them with 3D glasses. The artist himself will play music and also play with 16mm film to alter the projected images live. With smoke machine, the space will be reflected with rainbow light which will give the images physical presence beyond screen.

Makino Takashi born in Tokyo in 1978. Makino began making films in 1997. In 2001, after graduating from the Cinema Department of Nihon University College of Art, where he majored in Cinematography, he went to London alone to study under the Quay Brothers. He mainly studied film music and lighting. Makino continued to make films after returning to Japan and has held solo screenings regularly since 2004. He met Jim OfRourke in 2005, which accelerated his film making pace. His film, No is E won the Terayama Shuji Prize at the Image Forum Festival 2007. Makino was prominently featured at the International Film Festival Rotterdam 2008, where Elements of Nothing was nominated for the Tiger Award. Since then, as Japanfs leading experimental film artist, his films have been invited for screenings at more than 30 international film festivals and video art festivals. His installation using 35mm film and HD was exhibited at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. In 2009, still in cosmos won the Grand-Prix at the 25FPS International Experimental Film & Video Festival 2009. His first medium-length film, The World, was premiered at a late show at the Kichijoji Baus Theatre in Tokyo, marking the new dawn of experimental films.

Yamila Rios & Joris Strijbos  (NL)

COVEX

Audiovisual performance

“COVEX” is a collaboration between composer and sound artist Yamila Rios and visual artist Joris Strijbos. In this audio visual performance the duo researches the relations electro-acoustic sound and diffracted light-patterns in a diagonal mixage between the two media. The sonic output consist of a live performance with an extended cello. The output of the instrument is used to create a mass of sound which morphs from a complex noisy environment of fast fragmented textures to a serene and harmonic drone. While a overall collapse of tempi within sound-structures is manifested, the sound of the cello is being revealed. Within the visual domain, a meticulous constellation is formed by shooting laser beams trough transparent objects. By doing this an effect known as the “speckle pattern” occurs, resulting in abstract landscapes of detailed colour patterns and dynamic evolving shapes.

Yamila Ríos is a composer, a performer, and a sound artist based in The Netherlands. One of her main projects, ¨Marcelino¨ consists in the extension of her cello by attaching different sensors to the body of the instrument. The data of those sensors is translated and sent to a Max/Msp patch through an Ipson Lab. This system allows her to play and the sound of the cello in real time.

As a composer, Yamila has been working on various pieces. Her practice focuses on the mix of live electronics and the sonic exploration of traditional instruments. One of her last pieces, ¨Three Places¨ for live electronics and bass drum has been selected for the Seoul International Computer Music Festival.

Yamila holds a Bachelor and a Master in Sonology from the Royal Conservatorie of The Hague under the supervision of the professor Richard Barret.

Joris Strijbos is a Rotterdam-based artist, working in the fields of expanded (live) cinema, audio performances and kinetic-light-installations. He is one of the persons behind “Macular”, a collective which focus is mainly on the synaesthetic relation and interaction between moving image and sound.

Starting of as a musician he released work on different international record labels andperformed in many countries throughout Europe. While de-constructing and reconstructing audio equipment for his music performances, he expanded his live-set with obsolete and analogue video equipment. With a special interest in organic organizations and structures he nowadays creates emergent systems with a special focus on the possibilityʼs for audio/visual composition that arise from them.

Joris Strijbos holds a Bachelor of Arts and has recently finished his Master of Music at the ArtScience interfaculty of Image and Sound.

Clausthome & Martins Ratniks (LV)

OSCILLON ABSTRACTIONS AND ELECTRICITY GRAPHICS

Clausthome is a two-person (Lauris Vorslavs and Girts Radzins) project initiated at the turn of the century as a musical interpretation within noise/industrial subculture. It all began with exploration of sound synthesis and radio waves as a medium, with space research as a model of world exploration and with real data from radio telescope and universe research data servers. In the course of time, with the direction starting to loom ahead, accruing knowledge, experience and setting goals to be achieved, the project focused on self-made sounds and modified video recording devices, transmitters, receivers and synthesizers to reproduce the details of the journey in a more detailed and personal way, sharing the precious moments of revelation, and fantasy. Stylistically, Clausthome can be classified as a project mainly working with radio noise/electromagnetic ambient and drum & noise sounds.

Martins Ratniks is Riga based artist. Since 1997 he has participated in activities at the Centre of Electronic Arts and Media E-LAB and net radio Ozone. He is an active member of RIXC – Centre for New Media Culture and since 1998 a member of the artist collective F5 (Famous Five). As a VJ and video artist he has participated in several international festivals of media art and exhibitions together with RIXC and Clausthome.
