The arthathon will feature a series of workshops, discussions and lecture on Climate, Art and Energy. How much do we actually know of interconnections and how our daily life affects our planet, climate, energy, and resources? Climate change and energy are the challenges of the present and future. Now more than ever, art and creativity are approaches that can show new ways to work and interact and raise awareness of these different issues, envisioning more imaginative and sustainable future scenarios. Art can help us understand and be more aware of the components and connections in the Earth system, contributing to the discussion of the topics of renewable resources and electricity consumption with regards to climate change.
The arthathon will serve as a platform for discussion on how arts, creativity, and digital technologies can contribute to raising awareness of climate change and energy issues and building a 'greener' and more sustainable Europe. This arthathon will explore creative and alternative ways and approaches to create a future vision based on “ecosystemic” perspective, which is more than just socially inclusive, namely, involving not only us, humans but also “non-humans”, all living beings on our planet, referring to the notions of “terrestrial co-existence” (Latour), and “natureculture” (Harraway) which suggests that culture shouldn't be never been separated from nature…
The arthathon will address 4 different challenges:
Climate, Terrestrial Co-Existence and Non-Human Communication
Climate, Permaculture, and Ethics
Climate, Food, and Situated Knowledge
Climate, Green Energy and Resources
Each challenge will be addressed by the arthathon keynote speakers and workshop leaders. The arthathon will start with the introduction by Rasa Smite who will introduce the AUGE NEXT project and address the first challenge – Climate, Terrestrial Co-Existence and Non-Human Communication. Rasa Smite is an artist and researcher, working on the edge of art, science, and emerging technologies. She is co-founder of RIXC Center for New Media Culture in Riga, and co-curator of RIXC Art and Science festivals. She lectures on topics of networked media and art-science, techno-ecologies and sonic immersions, and artistic research methodologies at the Academy of Art and Design FHNW in Basel, Liepaja University in Latvia, HfG in Karlsruhe, and ACT at MIT in Boston.
Climate, Permaculture and Ethics will be addressed by the keynote speaker Lina Kusaite whois an illustrator, life coach and eco-art designer, living in Belgium. Her work has appeared in a diverse range of high caliber international publications, computer games and exhibitions.
The Climate, Food, and Situated Knowledge challenge will be addressed by the keynote speaker Maija Demitere who is a new media artist and researcher working in the field of slow media art and deep sustainability. Her focus is food production, everyday eating habits, gardening, and the role of nature and environment in the lives of contemporary people living in cities.
Keynote speaker and workshop leader Dr. Bart Hubert Maria Vandeput (Bartaku) will address the Climate, Green Energy and Resources challenge. He is an artist researcher whose art practice evolves since two decades, with collaborative experience in tying species, matter and disciplines. This, both within the energy- and bioarts as in between art, science and humanities. The practice is fused by light, energies, living, – non-living and in betweening bodies.
